There have been five generations of Jetta till now, with the sixth generation starting off from 2012. Jetta was designed to fill the niche for a sedan or saloon above the Golf hatchback.

Here’s a quick look at its generations to get a clear idea on what this series had offered in the past.

First Generation (1980- 1984)

The first generation of Jetta was unveiled at the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show and production started in August, 1979. With its debut in North America, Jetta was an all-new model at that time and was sold from 1980 to 1984, marking its first generation.

It was offered either as a 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe. It became the best-selling European car in Canada, Mexico, and United States.

Second Generation (1985- 1992)

The second generation models were marked to be the most successful ones and were in production from 1985 to 1992. This was the time when the new model saw peak sales, surpassing the sales of Golf by almost half.

Looking at the updates, the second generation models underwent an update in their body design, featuring large body colored bumper covers, side-clad and grille alterations, and low side skirts.

Third Generation (1993- 1998)

The third generation Jetta was known as Vento in the European markets. The exterior got some significant body changes in this generation, including varied wheel covers, new grille, and body-colored rub strips; their body design made them to be considered as the boxy-styled vehicle.

They were offered in two trim levels during this period- GL (basic trim) and GLS (luxury model). This generation models were referred to as “poor man’s BMW” since it was packed with trim features.

Fourth Generation (1999- 2005)

This new generation was revealed at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show after which it entered production. The models of this period are larger when compared to the previous generation ones with a spacious interior and luxury styling.

It was also the first to come with a new 5-cylinder power-train and independent rear suspension.

Sixth Generation (2012- )

This new generation of Jetta is quite different from all its previous generations due to the fact that it doesn’t share the platform with Golf as all the previous ones did!

These models are 3 inches longer than their predecessors offering more legroom for rear passengers and come with few exterior updates, resulting in better proportions and stylish design. The side profile is derived from the NCC hybrid coupe concept that was exhibited in Detroit in January; the frontal view is also more appealing.

VW new Jetta will be sold with 5 engine choices- 3 petrol and 2 diesel engines. The base models get back the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine from the 4th generation along with an optional 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine.
